How SmartShipping (Auto Carrier Selection) Works in SellerRunning

Learn how SmartShipping automatically selects the optimal shipping carrier per product to lower costs and improve BuyBox performance.

Updated over a week ago

Overview

SmartShipping is a feature in SellerRunning that automatically selects the best shipping carrier for each product (ASIN) based on product dimensions and shipping costs. Instead of using a single carrier for all your products, SmartShipping evaluates every available carrier and picks the one with the lowest total cost for each individual product.

Why Use SmartShipping?

By default, all products are priced using your manually selected carrier — even if another carrier offers better rates for a specific product. SmartShipping changes this by optimizing carrier selection per ASIN.

How It Works

When SmartShipping is enabled, the system performs the following for each product during repricing:

  1. Calculates product desi (volumetric weight) using the product's dimensions and each carrier's dimensional weight factor

  2. Computes total shipping cost per carrier, including: base rate, overweight surcharge, oversize surcharge, shipping tax, and insurance

  3. Selects the carrier with the lowest total cost

  4. Uses that carrier's cost in the product's final pricing calculation

Important Notes

SmartShipping only affects pricing calculations. The actual shipping labels and fulfillment process are determined by your warehouse selection, not by SmartShipping.

  • Products must have valid dimensions (width, height, length, weight) for SmartShipping to work. If dimensions are missing, the product will use the default carrier.

  • SmartShipping evaluates only carriers that are enabled and active for your warehouse/marketplace combination.

  • You can disable SmartShipping at any time to return to manual carrier selection.

Who Should Use SmartShipping?

SmartShipping is especially beneficial if you:

  • Sell a wide range of products with varying sizes and weights

  • Want to maximize BuyBox win rates through competitive pricing

  • Work with multiple shipping providers

  • Want to automate carrier optimization without manual intervention

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will SmartShipping affect how my warehouse ships orders?

A: No. SmartShipping only changes how your prices are calculated — not how items are physically shipped.

Q: Can I override the carrier manually for specific products?

A: Not directly. If you want to use a specific carrier for all products, disable SmartShipping and select your preferred carrier manually.

Q: What happens if my product doesn't have dimensions?

A: Products without valid dimensions will use your default (manually selected) carrier for pricing.

Q: Does SmartShipping work for all marketplaces?

A: Yes. SmartShipping supports all marketplaces connected to your SellerRunning account.
